Benchtop Positioners
What is a benchtop welding positioner?
A benchtop welding positioner is a compact rotating and tilting table that holds a workpiece and turns it under the arc, so the weld stays in the flat position while the welder keeps a comfortable, controlled stance. Shops use them for small weldments, pipe flanges, and repetitive MIG and TIG work where consistent bead quality matters.
Why use one?
- Weld precision — rotating the work under the arc produces consistent beads across the whole joint.
- Time efficiency — fewer stops to reposition and re-clamp means projects move faster without sacrificing quality.
- Safety — less manual handling of hot, heavy workpieces.
- Flexibility — tilt and rotation put the perfect weld angle within reach on parts that would otherwise fight you.
Koike's American-made benchtop positioner: the LD4
Koike Aronson builds one benchtop model — the LD4 benchtop welding positioner — engineered and manufactured in the USA by the same Aronson craftsmen behind our heavy industrial positioners. It carries a 400 lb load rating, tilts from 0 to 105° across 8 fixed positions, and delivers a 300-amp rotary ground for MIG and TIG welding. Beyond welding, it doubles as a smooth, controlled turntable for part positioning during fabrication, inspection, and finishing. The LD4 sells for $4,960 with free shipping and ships from stock.
How the LD4 compares to other benchtop positioners
| Model | Rated Capacity | Tilt Range | Rotation Speed | Table | Ground | Chuck Options | Manufacturer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Koike LD4 | 400 lb | 0–105° (8 positions) | 0.25–6.5 RPM | 20-1/2" | 300 A | WP-200 / WP-300 / WP-400, enclosed faceplate | Koike Aronson, Arcade, NY |
| MAC PS-1F | 200 lb flat; 100 lb vertical at 2" CG | 0–90° | 0.3–5 RPM | 12" | 500 A | MT6 or WP200 | All-Fab Corp., Michigan |
| MAC PS-2F | 550 lb flat; 325 lb vertical at 4" CG | 0–90° | 0.3–5 RPM | 14" | 500 A | MT10 or WP-300 | All-Fab Corp., Michigan |
| Key Plant VP0.05 | 220 lb horizontal; 110 lb vertical | 135° | 0.3–5 RPM | 11.8" | 500 A | None listed | Key Plant Automation, UK |

How to choose a benchtop welding positioner
Capacity and center of gravity. Size by the weight and center of gravity of your heaviest workpiece plus fixturing — not by table diameter. Our step-by-step guide, How to Size a Positioner, walks through the load and torque math with worked examples. For small weldments and pipe flanges up to 400 lb, the LD4 covers the range.
Tilt or flat turntable. A tilting positioner like the LD4 rotates and angles the workpiece for access a flat turntable can't offer; a self-locking worm gear should hold the chosen angle without drift under load.
Controls and accessories. Hands-free operation matters — look for a foot switch so both hands stay on the torch, and check chuck compatibility if you weld pipe and flanges. The LD4 pairs a momentary foot switch with an optional 3-jaw self-centering chuck whose enclosed faceplate blocks flux and weld spatter.
Build quality and footprint. A rigid, well-built positioner keeps its precision over years of arc time, and a compact footprint earns its bench space in small shops and field setups.
Who uses benchtop welding positioners?
Fabrication shops welding small parts and sub-assemblies, pipe-welding training centers and welding schools, and precision-assembly teams that need controlled, repeatable rotation — anywhere a full-size positioner is overkill but hand-rotating parts costs quality and time.
